Substack changed the text of my restack’s note. I changed it back to the text I actually wrote. Namely "below the salt" instead of "people of the underworld". But I must admit that I do not know if the term "below the salt" was still used during the Regency period but doubt that "people of the underworld" was the en vogue phrase at the time
'Below the salt' was still used metaphorically in the 19th century, when there were perhaps even finer and stricter social divisions than in the medieval period, but not such big tables.
